Choosing a Planting Site

There are two key considerations when choosing a site for bulbs:

  • Sunlight. Most bulbs need ample sunshine to bloom well the first spring after planting and to store up the energy required to flower in future springs. The bulbs listed on our Shade Tolerant Bulbs page can be planted beneath deciduous trees; these bulbs are able to satisfy most of their light requirements before the trees leaf out.
  • We provide light requirements for every item on this website. You’ll find them on the Design Criteria tab below the photos.
  • Drainage. All bulbs need good drainage; never plant bulbs where water collects. The drainage of heavy clay soils can be improved by digging in organic matter such as compost. If your soil is less than perfectly drained and you still want to plant bulbs, try Snowflake or Camassia.
