When to Plant

when to plant bulbs

This map shows the ideal fall planting windows for the United States, helping you know exactly when to plant bulbs based on your region and climate.

A few important notes as you plan:

  • Spring-flowering bulbs must be planted in fall. There’s no getting around it—this is a non-negotiable step if you want blooms come spring.

  • Plant when soil temps hit about 55°F. Bulbs need cool—but not frozen—soil to start developing roots before winter settles in. This is key to helping them establish properly and thrive in the months ahead.

  • You have about 8 weeks after the first frost. If the ground isn’t frozen, you can still plant. Don’t worry if you’re running a little behind—as long as you can get a shovel in the ground, it’s go time.

Colorblends makes it easy to meet your fall planting timeline. At checkout, you’ll have the option to choose a delivery week that lines up with your planting zone. Your bulbs will arrive sometime during that week—note that we can’t guarantee a specific delivery day.

Prefer to leave the timing to us? No problem. If you don’t choose a delivery window, we’ll ship your bulbs at the ideal time for planting in your area.
